International Land Coalition, a global network of civil society organizations (CSOs), farmers’ organisations, inter-governmental organisations and research institutions working on land issues evolved in response to the fast changing global scenario of large scale land acquisitions, international food crisis emanating from diverted land use to bio-fuels, climate change and increasing people’s struggle against land grabs. NES India, the India’s chapter of ILC, aspires for people centred land governance while focusing on ensuring Tenure Rights to the poor, marginalized and vulnerable communities, along with ensuring the food security of these communities.
The proposed panel will discuss the status of land reform policies in India and use of various strategies, such as use of judiciary, people’s mobilization, policy influencing and evidence based advocacy, etc to ensure the implementation of the pro-poor and pro-people policies and to establish the good practice models.
The challenges on commons in light of large scale land acquisition and land grabbing, way forward and need of collaborative efforts, hope that people and community gives and the way they manage and protect these lands.
As per government data, the implementation of Forest Rights Act has been only 3% in the country, how NES  India with it’s members are working towards ensure tenure rights to the tribals and other forest dwellers and engaging with government, affected community and other stakeholders to make an effort towards contributing towards effective operationalization of FRA.
Despite its growing economic status, India has a high number of poor and hungry people. The process of rapid urbanization is leading to land alienation and marginalization of farming communities. To build the capacity of small scale and marginalised farming communities in the promotion of farmer friendly and Sustainable Technologies. Increased adaption of farmer friendly technologies by more number of farmers will help the government agencies to revise their policies and practices may be in the first district level, second provincial and National level.
